The division problem…
We currently are enveloped in a mess of division. It seems everywhere you turn no matter what issue you talk about it turns into what side are you on. Every issue is completely polarizing and it is argument, after argument, after debate. Families are being ripped apart and are literally not talking to each other. It seems like there is no end in sight.
What could one person do to stop division?
It seems it is so large of a problem that one person has no hope of making any difference. I am just a small fish in a very large ocean. In fact, it can almost feel that if you try to fix things you become even more of an enemy.
What can we do…
The beautiful thing about humans is we are all absolutely and utterly unique there is no one else like you. However, we spend the rest of our lives trying to be like everyone else. We do our best to not be individual and be able to hide in a crowd. We create these masks to cover up our uniqueness and they keep us safe.
1. There is a seed of uniqueness inside everyone.
One thing we can do is understand every person you encounter has a seed of uniqueness inside of them and if put in the right atmosphere can become who they were created to be. If we could approach everyone not as they are but who they could be with the right atmosphere we could turn the tide.
2. Everything isn’t as black and white as you think.
All of these political, religious, and cultural arguments are not as black and white as we portray them to be. If we could go into the discussion understanding that it isn’t as easy as picking apple versus an orange but there are so many variables to each subject. There are good and bad politicians, there are good and bad police officers, there are good and bad christians. However, we approach these as those you are forced to believe completely in one way or the other.
3. Treat everyone not as an enemy but as a human.
Even if you don’t agree on the topic of discussion we are all still humans. We have to keep that in focus. Many times people have no idea why they believe they have just been raised to see the world a certain way. If we treat them as the enemy they dig in to their opinions. If we treat them as a seed with potential and we all take time to really understand what we believe instead of blindly following what someone told us we can turn this tide of division.
