These are the top five books for this who hate reading to pick up to start the journey to being a reader. They are easy reads that are captivating and easy to stop and start and still remember what you read. They stay with you throughout the read and are very hard to put down once you get into them.

1. The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is the first book I would start with. It is such a quick and easy read. In many ways, I believe it is like holding up a mirror to yourself, you can see yourself in every page of this book. It is a great starting book for those who hate reading. You can see my review of the book here.

2. Men we reaped – Jesmyn Ward

Men we reaped is part biography, part true crime, part a glimpse into a world of authenticity that many of us never experience. As you read this book, you find yourself engulfed in her world and you can feel the emotions she experienced. The author has an ability to put you in the moment and you can smell it, feel it, taste it. It is a very easy read and one you can come back to as you pace yourself for those who hate to read.

3. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – Robert M. Pirsig

The title of this book in my opinion is very misleading. Although, you can find a bit of motorcycle maintenance in the book it is so much bigger than that. Please do not allow this title to scare you away. Of the five books on this list this one may be the hardest of them to read. However, this book takes you on a journey that you want to go on. 4. The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaiman

The graveyard book will grab you from page one and you won’t be able to stop reading it until the end. It has all the elements you want in a great story. It has suspense and begins with a big crime and we get to watch the fall out of that crime and the tension between criminal and victim. This is an easy read and allows you to work through at your own pace.

5. Blindness – Jose Saramago

Blindness will engulf your senses as it is a book about the loss of sight. As you read this book you will experience tension and fear as you put yourself in the position of the characters. Again, this is an easy read that allows you to work through at your own pace. This is about a person who loses their sight and have to deal with this new reality.
